The Yushan National Park and the Media Bridge: Li Huiya’s 10 Years of Fruitful Service

On the 22nd, the Yushan National Park Administration held an “End-of-Year Press Liaison Event.” Li Huiya, the media liaison officer, carried out her final news communication duties. Starting January 1st next year, she will return to the field of environmental education, focusing on recruiting and training interpretive volunteers. Reflecting on her decade-long role as a bridge between the park and the media, she feels she has grown a lot, gained a deeper understanding of ecology, and improved her ability to express herself.

Li Huiya joined the Yushan National Park Administration in 1990, initially working in the Administrative Office handling meeting documentation. She later transferred to the Interpretation and Education Section as the coordinator for volunteer training, overseeing various dynamic and static activities related to environmental education and ecological conservation. These included cultural exchanges with tribal schoolchildren in the eastern and western sections of Yushan, as well as in-depth exploration of the quality interactions between indigenous peoples and mountain forests.

Known for her diligence, down-to-earth personality, and quick wit, Li Huiya was reassigned as the media liaison officer in 2007 by then-director of the Yushan National Park Administration, Chen Longyuan. In this role, she served as a bridge for promoting environmental education and conservation concepts, while also relaying research outcomes from various departments.

Over the years, she led media visits to numerous locations, including Nan’an and Walami Trails in Hualien, as well as Lulin Mountain and Linzhi Mountain in Tatachia, even venturing to the main peak of Yushan. These experiences allowed journalists to personally witness and feel the geological features, plant life, wildlife, and diverse altitude-based environmental changes within the Yushan area—helping prevent factual discrepancies and misunderstandings in their reporting.

Li Huiya has now served at the Yushan National Park Administration for 27 years, making her one of the most senior staff members. Her wealth of experience has become a valuable asset to the office. On the 22nd, during her last performance as the public relations bridge, she received warm support from major media outlets. She said, “I’m still working at the Yushan National Park Administration—just in a slightly different role. I’ve learned and grown a lot over these 10 years, and it’s been a truly fruitful journey.”
