The Lunar New Year is the longest holiday period for working professionals. Though this year only has six days off, which may feel a bit short, Skyscanner suggests adding three extra vacation days to enjoy an 11-day festive break. Moreover, flying on February 11th can save you up to 11.6% on airfare—more than enough to jet off, relax, and go on a holiday.

Based on the previously released “Skyscanner 2018 Calendar,” an analysis of airfare prices before and during the Lunar New Year reveals that February 11th is the most budget-friendly date, with savings reaching as high as 11.6%. Not only does this help you cut travel costs, but it also helps you avoid the peak travel period. For example, this year’s Lunar New Year holiday runs from February 15th to 20th. By taking three additional vacation days, you can plan a trip from February 10th to 20th or from February 15th to 25th—either way, you’ll get an 11-day long holiday.

For those planning international trips after February 15th, consider departing after February 17th. According to data, ticket prices on the 17th and 18th are about 2% cheaper than average. With four vacation days left and an additional three days off, you can stretch your trip to nine days. It's also recommended to avoid the price surge and peak departure days of the 14th, 15th, and 16th.

Here are the best times to buy cheap flights:

1. Japan: Flights to Tokyo are relatively cheaper three weeks before the New Year, Osaka four weeks before, Okinawa one week before, and Sapporo and Fukuoka one to one and a half months before.

2. Bangkok, Seoul, and European destinations: Plan early, as fares tend to rise as the date approaches based on past data.

3. Singapore and Hong Kong: Tickets are generally cheaper about three weeks before the New Year, but be extra mindful when scheduling around the local Lunar New Year holidays.
