Where is the most beautiful restroom in all of Taiwan? If you were to ask this question, the answer that gets the most votes might not be a department store or a five-star hotel, but rather the “ShiGu Qiaotang Cultural and Creative Park” in Kaohsiung. The restrooms here are not only spacious and bright, but as you sit on the toilet — while “answering nature’s call” — you can also admire a touch of greenery growing from the old red-brick walls. The greenery is perfectly framed by the small pool in front of the toilet, where fish swim leisurely. Bathed in sunlight, this restroom is full of ease and infused with vintage Taiwanese character — it’s undoubtedly the most beautiful one around.

When exploring a large park, it’s often the small details that truly capture its spirit. “The restroom here is the most beautiful in all of Taiwan,” says Wu Cuimin, deputy manager of the ShiGu Qiaotang Cultural and Creative Park. By blending traditional architectural forms with a fresh mix of classic and modern materials, the restrooms have been reimagined through careful planning — and have become a must-visit spot for many guests. The attention to detail begins with the delicate patterns on the red bricks on the walls, which seem to hint at the artistic care and craftsmanship infused throughout the park.

Located within the former Qiaotou Sugar Refinery in Kaohsiung City, the ShiGu Qiaotang Cultural and Creative Park is a brand-new tourist attraction created by the “ShiGu Percussion Orchestra.” This project revitalizes the century-old, decommissioned sugar factory space by merging percussion performance art with the cultural history and natural ecology of the historic sugar mill. The site preserves the original structures of the Taiwan Sugar Corporation while breathing new life into it with the art of drumming. The park offers drumming experiences and workshops, combining artistic and cultural depth, making it one of the emerging cultural hubs in Kaohsiung in recent years.

Wu Cuimin explained: “The name ‘ShiGu’ comes from the shape formed when two drumsticks cross, resembling the Chinese character ‘十’ (ten).” Symbolizing the convergence of forces from all directions, the park greets visitors with the old sugar refinery’s chimney towering in the center. Just a few steps ahead lies a preserved air-raid shelter from the sugar factory days. The red-brick structure gives off a strong sense of time standing still. A serene and natural atmosphere permeates the entire park, with traces of time visible everywhere.

When visiting the ShiGu Qiaotang Cultural and Creative Park, don’t miss the water theater. Inspired by local traditions such as the Songjiang battle array and various Taiwanese folk customs, the show combines percussion performances with a grand water curtain, a beacon tower, 4D projections, and magical water effects. Lasting nearly 30 minutes, the stage comes alive with water, drums, and dance as the main elements. Drummers perform atop a shallow pool; as the water curtain descends, they play their drums and leap through cascading water, creating a rhythmic spectacle where splashes and beats intertwine flawlessly. It’s a breathtaking performance you absolutely shouldn’t miss during your visit to the ShiGu Qiaotang Cultural and Creative Park.
