No need to head south to see flowers—Danan Riverside’s vibrant sea of blooms puts on a grand finale

No need to travel all the way to central or southern Taiwan to enjoy flower displays—Taipei’s riverside floral fields make their grand year-end debut too. The Taipei Water Department has planned multiple flower fields across riverside parks this year, with some already blooming successively since early December. Currently, two flower zones along Danan Riverside are in full, glorious bloom. The best time to view them is from now until mid-January next year. Don’t miss the chance to visit during the New Year’s holiday for flower-gazing, photo ops, and Instagram-worthy moments.

According to the Water Department, one of the Danan Riverside flower zones is located on the top of the embankment near Exit 1 of Muzha MRT Station (opposite Maokong Gondola’s Zoo Station), while the other is about 200 meters upstream from Hengguang Bridge, very close to both Taipei Zoo and National Chengchi University. Themed around childlike wonder, the floral designs use simple line art paired with nearly 110,000 pots of vibrantly colored seasonal flowers, resulting in an adorable yet lively and playful landscaped scene. The riverbank is transformed into a colorful canvas, with the total area covering 3,300 square meters.

Aside from immersing yourself in the sea of blooms and admiring up-close the varied forms of flowers like cosmos, begonias, salvias, scarlet sage, purple salvia, and petunias, these flower zones also offer fantastic views from above. It’s recommended that visitors take the Maokong Gondola or the Wenhu Line of the MRT, or ride the riverside elevator near the Art and Cultural Center at National Chengchi University, to gaze down at the creatively designed landscape patterns from a bird’s-eye view and enjoy a totally different visual experience.

Visitors can take a stroll or cycle through Danan Riverside Park. In addition to enjoying the riverside scenery, you can also stop by Taipei Zoo to see adorable and therapeutic animals like red pandas, koalas, and king penguins. Alternatively, hop on the Maokong Gondola to Guanyin Temple to pray for peace and prosperity in the new year, or visit a tea house in Maokong for tea and snacks to unwind after a long year.

Flower Spot 1: Top of the embankment near Exit 1 of Muzha MRT Station (opposite Maokong Gondola’s Zoo Station)

MRT:
Take the Wenhu Line of the MRT to Muzha Station (Exit 1) → Walk toward Section 4 of Muzha Road under the MRT bridge → See the YouBike station in front of Muzha MRT and walk up to the embankment → Walk downstream for 2 minutes to arrive.
Bus: Take bus routes 251, 251区, 252, 282, 282副, 647, 660, 666, 679, 795, 819, 915, 1503, Brown 3, or Brown 7 to Muzha MRT Station, then walk under the MRT bridge toward the embankment.
Best Viewing Spots:
1. Take the Wenhu Line of the MRT to Zoo Station (Exit 2) → Walk 5 minutes along Section 2 of Xinguang Road to Maokong Gondola’s Zoo Station and take the gondola for views.
2. Embankment top near Exit 1 of Muzha MRT Station

Flower Spot 2: 200 meters upstream from Hengguang Bridge

Bus:
Take bus routes 251, 611, Green 1, 793, 252, 295, 819, or Brown 7 to Jingwen High School (Taiwan College of Performing Arts) Station, then walk along Section 2, Lane 161 of Muxin Road for 5 minutes and cross the embankment to arrive.
Best High-Viewing Spots:
Take bus routes 236, 282, 295, 530, 611, 676, 679, Brown 3, Brown 5, Brown 6, Brown 11, Brown 18, Green 1, or Small 10 to Chengchi University Station → Walk into the campus → Head uphill toward the riverside elevator platform near the Art and Cultural Center for views.
