When friends gather for hotpot, have you ever wondered where the ingredients come from? The Hotpot Sightseeing Factory in Dawu, Keelung, has the answers. It’s Taiwan’s first hotpot culture museum, where you can see various innovative hotpot ingredients and miniature versions of the equipment used to make them. Professional guides explain the entire production process, and you can watch the hotpot ingredients being made through glass panels. If you get hungry, there’s even a DIY hotpot ingredient activity — make your own and eat it fresh, with more flavor than frozen ones.

In 2013, Keelung held its first evaluation of top 10 trendy restaurants. “Mykonos Private Island,” a seaside restaurant located along Lover’s Lake Coastal Boulevard and outside Muzhaishan, features blue-and-white Greek-style architecture. With the sound of waves crashing against the rocks, adorable hand-drawn illustrations, and the restaurant’s signature French bread balls — round bread filled with richly baked macaroni — even Hsu Tian-lin praised how it was “stringy with flavor.” Prefer something other than Western cuisine? Myzi Ke Pizza, near National Taiwan Ocean University, might be more to your taste. The entire shop’s furniture, even the brick oven, was handmade by the owner, who carved driftwood into benches, bars, and little wooden chairs. The aroma of pizza fills the air, mixed with the scent of wood.

But when you come to Keelung, you absolutely can’t miss the seafood — and especially the seaweed from Peace Island. Using seaweed as the main ingredient, they’ve developed all kinds of hot dishes, cold drinks, and souvenirs, such as seaweed taro balls, sea bird’s nest, blue algae juice, and even seaweed stinky tofu hotpot — all available only here. Seaweed hot dishes aren’t rare, but what about seaweed ice cream? “Shrimp Ice Crab Sauce” by the docks was the first to combine seafood with frozen treats. There’s seaweed slush, squid ice cream, and even passionfruit tuna — sweet flavors with the umami of seafood. If you’re in the mood for something salty, try their signature “Shrimp Ice Crab Sauce” — bright red shrimp-flavored slush dotted with bits of crab, topped with scoops of ice cream. The incredibly fresh taste is addictive.

%The chewy texture of … is incredibly satisfying, making it a true hidden gem among Keelung’s seafood offerings.

Finally, don’t forget to pick up some gifts. But if you still only know about Li Hu Cake Shop, you’re really missing out. Jiaxin Nougat, located opposite the Anle Market, specializes in one-of-a-kind Keelung snacks, like seaweed almond nougat, seaweed crackers, seaweed rice rolls, and Chicken Cage Cake — stuffed with small squid, sakura shrimp, and bonito flakes. Each bite tastes of the ocean. Quanli Rice Crackers are also a famous Keelung souvenir. Even Foxconn tycoon Terry Gou specified their rice crackers as wedding banquet treats. The store may be small, but it’s full of hidden gems.

The Keelung City Government and Lion Travel are closely planning their food and sightseeing routes. Zheng Nian-fu, director of the Industrial Development Division, said Keelung has so much delicious food, but due to its scattered locations, it’s not as crowd-pulling as Temple Mouth. He hopes that through cooperation with travel agencies, more visitors will discover Keelung’s delicacies beyond Temple Mouth. With the help of tour buses and shuttle services directing tourists to different spots, they’ll also get to experience more authentic Keelung flavors.
