The breathtaking scenery of Taroko National Park in Hualien is truly captivating. Among its wonders is the Shakadang Trail Canyon, often referred to as the "Valley of Mystery." This lesser-known gem features a 4.5-kilometer trail built along steep cliffs, where you can see water splashing from the creek against the rocks. As you venture further upstream, the landscape reveals the beauty of pristine forests. In addition to nature’s stunning craftsmanship, visitors may also spot precious wildlife such as Formosan macaques, flying squirrels, swallowtail butterflies, and Begonia ravenii along the path.

The Shakadang Trail sits at an elevation of 60 meters. Along the route, you’ll find several Truku tribal villages, including “Three Houses” and “Five Houses.” Originally named the Valley of Mystery Trail, it was later renamed Shakadang (Skadang), after the former tribal name of the Dadaocheng settlement upstream. The trail stretches about 4.5 kilometers from the entrance to Three Houses. It is gently sloped and easy to walk, offering opportunities for nature observation along the way. There are also over ten scenic viewing platforms along the trail where visitors can rest and enjoy the views. Some sections feature water-friendly paths that allow you to step down into the canyon.

The trail runs alongside the Shakadang River, where the riverbed is filled with rocks composed of marble and gneiss. The crystal-clear, fast-flowing water crashes against the stones, creating a natural and refreshing melody. According to Taroko National Park Headquarters, the diverse plant life along the trail attracts numerous insects and animals. You might even spot unique sights like Begonia ravenii by the path, or spiders hiding among flower pistils, waiting to ambush their prey.

The Shakadang Trail is shaded by greenery, making it a comfortable destination even in summer. The surrounding plateaus are home to species such as Machilus kusanoi, camphor trees, and Ficus variegata, while the rocky cliffs host plants like Formosan alpine bamboo and Lecanopteris sinuosa. Visitors have said, “This canyon is absolutely stunning!” and note that even visiting at noon is pleasantly cool.

Transportation Information
Public Transport: The “Hualien Good Bus” shuttle service has a stop at Shakadang when traveling from Taroko toward Tianxiang.
Driving: From the Taroko Visitor Center, head west through the Shakadang Tunnel. The trail entrance is located at the right side of the Shakadang Bridge at the tunnel exit. Vehicles can drive across Shakadang Bridge, and parking is available nearby.
