Netizens vote for Taiwan's top 10 haunted spots; Xinhai Tunnel takes the top spot

As the seventh lunar month approaches, during which the elderly often remind everyone to be cautious and avoid places with heavy yin energy, yam.com has launched a timely online poll for Taiwan's top 10 haunted spots.

Yam.com compiled and screened 29 locations rumored to have experienced accidents or terrifying events, and nearly 120,000 netizens voted to determine Taiwan's top 10 haunted spots. The rankings are as follows: 1st place — Taipei’s Xinhai Tunnel, 2nd place — Beiyi Highway, 3rd place — Darren Hall at Chinese Culture University in Taipei, 4th place — Xinglin Hospital in Tainan, 5th place — Cadoori Amusement Park in Taichung’s Dakeng, while 6th to 10th places are: Liu Family Ancestral House in Minguo, Chiayi; 25 Ladies’ Shrine in Kaohsiung; Sunshine Villa in Baishawan, New Taipei City; Ghost House in Keelung; and Xining Public Housing in Taipei.

However, according to a report by the Liberty Times, many residents near these spots dismissed the ghost stories, calling them superstitious rumors. For example, alumni of Darren Hall at Chinese Culture University, which ranked third, said it was just students scaring each other during Halloween. The well-known Minguo Ghost House was also dismissed by the local village chief and nearby residents as just an old house that wasn’t scary at all. As for Cadoori Amusement Park in Taichung’s Dakeng, the local village chief called the rumors nonsense.

In response to the various reactions, yam.com explained that the poll was a fun, seasonal activity. The candidate locations were gathered from bloggers, news reports, and online rumors, and no location was intentionally stigmatized.
