When traveling to Yilan in the scorching summer, many people make a special trip into downtown Yilan just to try the famously delicious “Qilin” shaved snow ice. According to staff, the shop’s most famous fruit-flavored snow ice series is made using a variety of seasonal fruits to create a “fruit ice,” which is then shaved into thin flakes using an ice shaver. This is one of the secrets behind the exceptionally rich flavor that this shop is known for.

For example, the durian flavor — as soon as you open the lid, the rich aroma greets you, and once you taste it, the durian flavor lingers wonderfully on your palate. Liu Mou, a tourist, said that his favorite is the peanut flavor, which has an intense, aromatic peanut taste that leaves a long-lasting fragrance. Chen Mou, who visits every time she comes to Yilan, says you should try all the flavors, as each has its own unique characteristics, and you can also customize your serving with pudding or various toppings based on your personal preference.
Local Yilan resident Ah Jun mentioned that “Qilin” was founded by two sisters surnamed Lai. In fact, winters in Yilan are often damp and cold, so selling ice isn’t typically seen as a promising business. But these sisters managed to create one of the few distinctive and successful ice shops. However, “Qilin” is closed from December to March of the following year — a characteristic that sets it apart among Yilan’s ice shops.
