For travelers on a self-guided trip in Japan, if you've grown tired of simple, instant rice bowls and ramen, yet can't afford pricey kaiseki cuisine, a casual spot like Enoshima Cabin—serving straightforward seafood rice bowls—is worth a try. The rice bowl is first wrapped in nori, giving it a rather mysterious appearance. Locals say it’s a restaurant that serves the deep essence of ocean flavors.

▲ The menu also features hand-drawn styling.

The hand-drawn, wooden-style "Enoshima Cabin" uses no excessive colors but still exudes a simple and rustic charm. Step inside, and cool sea breezes mixed with faint ocean scents waft into the cabin—a smell that's full of Enoshima's essence and the aroma that accompanies your rice. On a simple serving plate, the staff presents a bowl of soup and a generous square nori-wrapped seafood rice bowl, then quietly places a wooden spoon on the plate. This is the daily lunchtime set meal at the cabin.

Lift the nori that partially covers the rice, and you'll find finely mashed fresh fish mixed with sauce and onions, spread abundantly over the rice. According to local resident Ms. Sano Yumiko, the seafood rice at the cabin changes depending on the type of fish caught each day, so you can enjoy a different flavor every time. Tear off a piece of nori that still retains its crispness—the tear reveals the aroma of roasted seaweed. Then use it to wrap together the rice mixture, marinated fish, and salmon roe, creating your own simple nori hand roll to enjoy.

Wrap a small spoonful of fish and rice together in torn pieces of nori and eat. The fish and vinegar rice, enveloped in nori, first release a rich umami soy sauce flavor along with the scent of nori. Then, layers of sour, sweet, and salty tastes, along with a hint of white sesame, blend into the next bite of the nori rice roll. The savory aroma fills your mouth, and with a sip of soup and the taste of Enoshima sea breeze drifting in through the window, it almost feels like a traditional “fisherman’s dish”—boldly prepared on fishing boats, just as fishermen have done for ages.
