Huzhou’s Doughnut-and-Horseshoe-Shaped Hotel Divides Opinions Domestically and Abroad

In early August, Sheraton Hotels officially opened its new property in Huzhou, China. However, its eye-catching doughnut-and-horseshoe-shaped exterior has sparked diverse reactions internationally and locally. CNN described it as “China’s weirdest building,” while many online in China admire how the ever-changing lights at night create stunning reflections on the lake.

This distinctive new hotel, which resembles both a doughnut and a horseshoe when viewed from afar, was designed by Ma Yansong, a leading figure among China’s newer generation of architects, and his MAD Architects team. It promotes itself as the ultimate embodiment of water, with every room offering natural sunlight and views of Taihu Lake. By day, it appears as an elegant white structure; by night, LED lights encircle the building floor to ceiling, casting dynamic reflections on the dark waters of Taihu Lake and exuding a different kind of luxury.

The entire building stands over 100 meters tall and spans approximately 75 acres. Due to its unique inverted U-shape, careful thought went into the interior spatial design. The ceilings feature a wave-like lighting installation made up of 20,000 Swarovski crystals, while the floors are paved with Afghan white jade and Brazilian tiger’s eye stone. With 27 floors in total, the hotel houses 321 guest rooms, including 40 business suites, 37 holiday villas, and a presidential suite.

Reservations are now being accepted, though full completion of all hotel facilities is expected by September 31.
