Scorching summer heat continues – head to the Neidong Forest Recreation Area in Wulai for a cool escape

In the sweltering summer, escape the heat and hustle of the city and come to the hidden paradise of Neidong Forest Recreation Area in Wulai. As soon as you step into this place, it’s completely different from the fast-paced urban life. Surrounded by the sounds of insects and birds, and accompanied by mountains and rivers, it feels like being in a forest bath – the perfect spot to relax and unwind during the holidays.

Located in the southernmost part of New Taipei City, Wulai District, the Neidong Forest Recreation Area is situated in Xinxian Village within Wulai. Also locally known as Wawagou (Doll Valley), it was established in 1984, covering an area of over 1,000 hectares, with an elevation ranging from 230 to 800 meters. From the start of the trail, you can hear the rushing sound of waterfalls accompanied by birdsong, with tree-lined paths welcoming you into what feels like an ecological world waiting to be explored.

The most famous attraction in the area is the Neidong Waterfall (Xinxian Waterfall). According to Wulai’s tourist brochure, the Neidong Waterfall is formed in the “Gangan Formation” rock layer with a significant height drop. Its unique three-tiered waterfall structure causes the splashing water to generate a high concentration of negative ions, ranking first in the nation.

After entering the park, follow the waterfall-viewing trail. Standing on the Leshui Bridge and looking down, you’ll see the lower tier of the Neidong Waterfall. Though not as wide as the Shifen Waterfall, it cascades down like white silk, hidden within a valley embraced by lush trees on both sides. The force of the water spray and the abundant negative ions in the air make visiting this spot very beneficial for your health.

On the tranquil mountain trails, immerse yourself in a forest fairyland filled with birdsong and floral scents – a truly relaxing experience. Along the way, there are rest pavilions for visitors, and the cool mountain spring water from driftwood sinks is perfect for washing and cooling down after a walk.

A local taxi driver, Brother Li, mentioned that in recent years, Yunxian Amusement Park has gradually declined, and the cable car sees fewer riders. Many people have turned to Neidong instead. With its beautiful scenery, many tourists enjoy hiking here, and the place gets quite crowded on holidays. As for Ms. Lin, who was visiting Neidong for the first time, she said that it’s very cool here in the summer, and strolling through the forest feels really leisurely and pleasant.

Although it's a great summer retreat, transportation can be a bit inconvenient. The free community shuttle bus from Wulai to Xinxian has been discontinued. Visitors using public transport should take a bus to the Taiwan Railway Station next to the Liansheng Bridge at the Wulai Scenic Area, then take a taxi – prices are set by the New Taipei City Government, and the fare to Neidong is NT$360.

1. By Car: Take National Freeway 3, exit at Xindian Interchange, then drive along Zhongxing Road Section 2 to Section 1, Provincial Highway 9, Provincial Highway 9A, and Township Road Beixin 107.
2. By Public Transport: Take New Taipei Bus 849 to the Wulai Terminal, then walk to the Taiwan Railway Station next to the Liansheng Bridge at the Wulai Scenic Area, and take a taxi to the Neidong Forest Recreation Area.
