Who’s the next Kenting? Netizens: The “food capital” has already fallen.

From the “braised food chaos” caused by Wu’s Braised Snacks on Kenting Street, to shop owners clashing with whistleblowers over receipts, and tourists from Thailand paying NT$490 for two bowls of braised food in Ximending. So which other tourist areas in Taiwan are suffering from rising rents, unreasonable pricing, poor planning, low value for money—and as a result, seeing fewer visitors—just like Kenting?

According to a post on PTT (Taiwan’s popular online forum) asking, “As we all know, Kenting is pretty much a microcosm of Taiwan’s tourism industry. What other places do you think could be the next Kenting?” Here are the tourist spots netizens have singled out:

1. Night markets: Shilin, Fengjia, Hualien

Hualien’s newly opened night market only has a few old vendors from Ziguan Night Market, which is reasonable—but the rest are quite pricey. After the sky-high fruit incident, Shilin Night Market is also at the top of netizens’ lists as an outrageously expensive night market. In Fengjia Night Market, the cheaper stalls are almost being replaced by claw game arcades, but since there are many students, there are still some affordable options.

2. Historic streets in various locations: Jiufen, Neiwan, Tamsui

A regular breaded hot dog on Yinge Old Street costs NT$60, fried squid in Tamsui goes for NT$200, and Neiwan Old Street in Hsinchu uses the same marketing tactics—overpriced and unoriginal, just the same old shops.

3. Food capital “Tainan”

Creative dishes in Tainan come with creative prices too. Stores in renovated old streets are all gimmicky, hyping up their hipster creativity to double the prices. Street snacks have been hyped to the point where their original simplicity and deliciousness are gone, prices have skyrocketed, and the taste has gotten worse. Recently, the high-value-for-money shops in Tainan are mostly in the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi underground mall. A night at a homestay can cost NT$6,000, and a quick online search reveals nothing but promotional articles written by paid influencers.
