It has finally been confirmed that Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market will relocate to Toyosu Market on October 11, 2018.

There is finally new progress in the long-delayed relocation of Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government and related industry groups have reached a consensus — Tsukiji Market will move to Toyosu Market on October 11, 2018.

Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market was originally scheduled to move to its new location and be renamed Toyosu Market on November 7, 2016. However, just before the move, it was revealed that the new Toyosu site had soil contamination issues, and harmful substances were detected in the groundwater. Tokyo’s then-new Governor Yuriko Koike announced a delay in late September 2016, but did not specify when the relocation would take place.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government, along with related businesses and associations, had not reached a consensus on the move to Toyosu Market, which is why the relocation date had been delayed for so long. After Governor Koike officially announced the new relocation date, the biggest challenge faced by the Tokyo government — transferring Tsukiji Market — has finally moved forward. The relocation work for vendors and shops will also begin.

After the move, the original site of Tsukiji Market will be demolished immediately, as the location will be used as a logistics center for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

However, only the inner market of Tsukiji, which mainly deals with wholesale fish and vegetables and houses many shops and food stalls, will be relocated. The outer market, which is full of eateries and local delicacies, will remain in place. So food lovers can still enjoy various local foods at the outer market.

In addition, most vendors and restaurants from the inner market will move to the new market. However, the only coffee shop in Tsukiji Market, “Aiyo Kafe t2 no Mise,” will close. The owner plans to transform the shop into a tempura restaurant after relocating to the new market.
