Eye-catching！Giant yellow rubber duck and "Roundy" the panda kites take to the sky

The yellow rubber duck and panda Roundy soar in the sky！The New Taipei City North Coast International Kite Festival takes place on September 21 and 28 at Shimen’s Bai Sha Bay and Kite Park. To coincide with popular “animal stars,” the New Taipei City Cultural Affairs Bureau specially created nearly three-story-high kites of the yellow duck and Roundy, and invited kite masters from 20 countries—150 in total—to show off their skills. Limited free mini-kites will be given out both days.

This year’s most eye-catching kites—the 8-meter-tall yellow rubber duck and 10-meter-tall Roundy the panda, each about three stories high—took nearly two months to make. The production team said that due to their massive size, flying the yellow duck requires at least nine adults pulling on 500-pound ropes to get it airborne, which is no easy feat.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau noted that this year’s kite festival, themed “Meet Your Kite Happiness,” invites 150 experts and features carefully arranged stunt kite performances, hexagonal kite competitions, rare night-glowing kite displays, and on-site DIY kite-making lessons. Visitors who collect three event stamps can exchange them for a free themed mini-kite at 2 p.m. on September 21 or 10 a.m. on September 28. Only 600 sets are available.
