An Orlando Disney World as big as Keelung City — the world’s largest fairy-tale kingdom

Florida is also known as the “Sunshine State,” with mild temperatures year-round, making it a major tourist destination in the United States. In addition to the famous Miami beach vibe, another major city, Orlando, is home to multiple world-renowned theme parks. Among them, Walt Disney World in Orlando attracts over 45 million visitors annually, significantly boosting local tourism.

There are currently five Disney parks worldwide, two of which are in the United States. However, most people’s impression of Disney in the U.S. is often California Disneyland. In fact, Disney World in Florida is the second park built after California Disneyland and is also the location of Disney’s headquarters. It holds the title for the largest area among comprehensive theme parks.

The full name of Disney in Florida is Walt Disney World. The use of “World” instead of “park” is due to its vast size. The resort includes its own hotels, shopping malls, a monorail system, ferries, shuttle buses, and highways, resembling a small world. To experience all the attractions, at least a week is needed. Therefore, visitors to Walt Disney World in Florida are advised to plan for an extended holiday.

According to data provided by Disney in the U.S., Walt Disney World in Florida covers an area of approximately 124 square kilometers, roughly the size of Keelung City. The park is mainly divided into four themed areas: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom; five water parks; 32 resort hotels; five golf courses and sports complexes; and Disney Springs, which combines dining, shopping, and entertainment.

Due to the vast area of the park, visitors usually prioritize the four main themed areas within limited time. Magic Kingdom is the core of Disney World and can be subdivided into seven zones, including Cartoon City, Tomorrowland, and Adventureland. It offers the most diverse range of rides and daily large-scale events such as “Cinderella’s Coronation,” two parades per day, and a grand fireworks show in the evening.

As for the Epcot area, it is divided into FUTURE WORLD and WORLD SHOWCASE. The former features futuristic rides, but the highlight is the interactive show Turtle Talk with Crush, set in the Finding Nemo universe. During the 15–20 minute session, a turtle from the movie appears on screen and interacts with the audience. WORLD SHOWCASE showcases representative architecture and cultural exhibits from various countries, resembling a world’s fair, allowing visitors to explore different nations with ease.

For those wanting to experience the world of Hollywood movies, Hollywood Studios offers behind-the-scenes insights and thrilling chase scenes. Families can also enjoy Disney animation-themed attractions and activities, such as a musical based on The Little Mermaid and a 4D shooting game featuring Toy Story, perfect for parent-child interaction. This area primarily focuses on “shows,” with each performance being spectacular, especially the nighttime Fantasmic, which combines special effects, fireworks, live actors, water screens, projections, flames, and music to bring Disney animated stories to life — the highlight of nighttime entertainment.

While many Disney attractions are model-based, Animal Kingdom is Disney’s most costly creation, featuring real-life habitats from various continents and diverse wildlife. Although it is the first to close among the four major themed areas and lacks elaborate fireworks, interacting closely with animals in this carefully maintained “wilderness” is a rare and educational experience.

Gao Mingzhe, a local overseas Chinese who lived in Orlando for many years, said that even during Florida’s off-peak tourist season, visitor numbers remain high. Additionally, all guests must go through security checks before entering, including scanning their tickets and fingerprints, often resulting in long queues at the entrance. Therefore, visitors are advised to arrive early.

Moreover, all popular rides issue “Fast Passes.” By inserting your admission ticket into the Fast Pass machine, you can obtain a pass and continue enjoying other attractions before returning at the designated time to skip the long queue for the ride you initially wanted. Understanding which rides require Fast Passes beforehand and planning your route accordingly can help maximize your time.
