Taiwan’s New Cultural Youth Spot “Yide Western-Style House” – Free Photography with Century-Old Red Brick Walls and Archways

Taichung has a new cultural youth hotspot to explore. In 2007, the Taichung City Government’s Cultural Affairs Bureau registered the former residence of Lin Mao-yang as the “Yide Western-Style House,” a Taichung municipal historical building. This nearly century-old structure has been renovated into a nostalgic arts and culture space, where visitors can explore the red-brick heritage house and walk into the former home of an elite family to witness the splendor of the past.

This old building was originally constructed by Lin Mao-yang in the 1920s. The historic site consists of a traditional three-courtyard house and a western-style building. The three-courtyard house combines traditional southern Fujian architecture with Westernized styles from Taiwan’s Japanese colonial period, featuring cylindrical arcades and red brick walls that reflect Western influences. The other western-style building is a two-story structure with wooden roofs and window lattices full of retro charm. Although the old buildings have weathered the years, you can still imagine the grandeur and elegance of the local gentry back then.

Yide Western-Style House covers a large area and is free to enter. The exposed aggregate concrete and red brick walls offer a nostalgic feel that’s perfect for photography and exploration. The site also includes a tea house that sells food, drinks, cultural and creative goods, and an independent bookstore.
