The Liudui Hakka Cultural Park’s admission fees scared away visitors — now free entry is restored starting today

Located in Pingtung County, the Liudui Hakka Cultural Park saw a significant drop in visitor numbers after it began outsourcing operations and charging admission fees in February (2013) of this year, with a record low of fewer than 100 visitors in a single day. As the park is about to celebrate its second anniversary, the Liudui Cultural Park, which has taken back management rights, is also taking the opportunity to inform the public that free admission has been reinstated.

Covering an area of about 30 hectares, the Liudui Hakka Cultural Park is located in Neipu Township, Pingtung County. It was established to preserve and showcase the Hakka way of life across 12 Hakka administrative villages in Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County. Initially, admission to the park was free, but since February of this year, when it began outsourced operations, visitors were required to purchase tickets, costing around NT$120. The park stated that the introduction of admission fees scared away visitors, with a record low of fewer than 100 visitors in a single day.

After six months of the fee system being in place, the Executive Yuan’s Council of Hakka Affairs decided to terminate the contract with the outsourced operator and take back management rights, restoring free admission starting September 11. Fu Zhaoshu, director of the Hakka Development Center under the Council of Hakka Affairs, said that visitor numbers have significantly rebounded after free admission was reinstated. “Now, on weekdays, the average number of visitors is at least over a thousand, and on holidays, it can reach three to four thousand or more.” However, based on the concept of “user pays,” Fu also pointed out that reasonable admission fees will be planned in the future to help maintain the park environment.

The Liudui Hakka Cultural Park, which will turn two years old on October 22, has arranged anniversary celebration events and invited well-known groups such as the Jiutian Folk Arts Troupe to perform in the park, while also taking the opportunity to promote the message of free admission to the public.
