Famed as the “Moses Parting the Sea,” a gravel path emerges to connect Qubi Mountain and Chi Islet after the tide recedes

Penghu’s intertidal zone boasts rich biodiversity, and its beautifully diverse islands have long been a great place for visitors to experience marine ecology. The Double-Heart Stone Weir in Qimei, known for its romantic shape, has become an iconic sight of Penghu tourism. But locatedbetween Qubi Mountain and Chi Islet in Beiliao Village, Huxi Township, when the tide slowly recedes, a gravel beach path gradually appears from the sea, resembling the biblical “Moses Parting the Sea”—this marvelous natural landscape has become a must-see spot for tourists in recent years.

The Chi Islet tide-walking activity in Beiliao Village, Huxi Township, Penghu County, has long been known for witnessing the “Moses Parting the Sea” spectacle and has become a place where visitors gather to observe this natural wonder. Moreover, since the Chi Islet path is formed by piles of gravel, visitors can enjoy the thrill of tide-walking while also helping to protect the marine ecosystem.However, because the seawater rises back very quickly, the Penghu National Scenic Area Administration advises visitors to carefully calculate the tides and minimize their time on the path to avoid danger.。

The Penghu Administration will also publish a recommended tide-walking schedule monthly on its official website and the Facebook fan page “Kenting Fun Tour – Penghu National Scenic Area.” The schedule converts the lunar calendar’s tide times into Gregorian calendar dates and days of the week, including the day’s high and low tide times and tidal ranges. Based on tide tables released by the Central Weather Bureau, it calculates that the gravel path is likely to emerge about three hours before low tide. The four-hour window—from that time until one hour after low tide—is considered relatively safe. Beyond this period, visitors should not enter the sea for tide-walking to avoid danger.

Additionally, to promote alternative winter tourism in Penghu and allow visitors to experience natural wonders under the seasonal winds, from October 15 to December 25, 2013, visitors who completed the Chi Islet tide-walking and island-landing activity in Beiliao Village, Huxi Township, and uploaded their photos to the “Kenting Fun Tour – Penghu National Scenic Area” Facebook fan page, were eligible to receive a specially designed “Moses Parting the Sea” commemorative certificate from the Penghu National Scenic Area Administration.
