Located in Dong’ao Bay in Yilan, stretching from Wuyan Cape in the north to Wushibi in the south, the bay forms a graceful arc, with Fenqinlin Fishing Port situated at its southernmost tip. The stunning seascape of Fenqinlin Fishing Port, where the sea meets the sky, has been recommended as a hidden gem by many bloggers. Recently, it has also become a favorite fishing spot for many anglers. However, as visitor numbers increase on weekends, so does the amount of trash, gradually tarnishing the once-charming little fishing port.

In the past, when visitor numbers were low, the local coast guard station staff would personally cover the costs of purchasing garbage bags and brooms, and would voluntarily clean up the trash during their off-duty hours. But as weekend visitors have increased, so too has the trash. Although some local residents or coast guard personnel help maintain cleanliness, the sharply rising cost of garbage bags has become a heavy burden, especially for those with limited incomes. That’s why Mr. Lin, an avid angler, launched a fundraising campaign on a crowdfunding website.

Why is there a need to raise funds for garbage bags? Mr. Lin explained that in the past, a single garbage bag at Fenqinlin Fishing Port could last two weeks without being filled. Now, just one weekend can generate several large bags of trash. While large garbage bags may only cost around NT$10 each, the high volume of consumption has become a financial strain for local residents who are already struggling economically. They simply can no longer afford to cover these costs themselves. He hopes to raise NT$5,000 through the crowdfunding platform to purchase garbage bags and cleaning supplies, thereby alleviating the burden on local volunteers.

So far, the fundraising campaign has collected NT$4,000, showing that Taiwanese people are still willing to lend a generous hand to those in need. But for those travelers and anglers who create and litter the trash, isn’t it time for some self-reflection? Don’t let convenience come at the cost of polluting the environment and spoiling the beauty of this small fishing port.
