The generously portioned Shuanglian Street Braised Pork Rice is a favorite snack of Xiong and Miao. The non-greasy braising sauce paired with minced meat, along with three to five side dishes, makes it both filling and satisfying.

Taking advantage of the Mid-Autumn holiday, Xiong and Miao didn’t want to go far and deal with crowds, so they decided to stay in Taipei and relax. They just happened to be craving this nostalgic old flavor, so Xiong and Miao braved the heavy rain to come here – they had to eat here even outside of regular meal times!!

The shop was preparing dinner, with quite a few dishes that looked pretty tasty!!

A feature of Shuanglian Street Braised Pork Rice is the selection of side dishes at the entrance (of course there’s also roast chicken leg, but they didn’t order it this time..)

Here’s a shot of the storefront. Overall, the tables are clean and the floors aren’t sticky, making it feel more comfortable when you avoid peak meal hours.

In terms of price, it’s mid-range and reasonable. These days, prices really are getting higher and higher. Since they didn’t eat much at lunch, Xiong and Miao picked a few more side dishes, which worked out well as an afternoon snack (they’re really greedy..)

First up is the Braised Tofu (20 NT$, portion). It looks really flavorful (the chili on top was added by Xiong!!)

Both the flavor penetration and texture are great, and there’s quite a bit of juice inside once you bite into it – it’s quite an appetizing dish.

Red Braised Pork (40 NT$, portion). This one is served cold rather than hot, but the aroma is still great!!

Had a bite – well!! To put it simply, I thought the cold red braised pork might be a bit greasy, but it was actually fine. The fatty parts were quite sweet, and paired well with the lean meat for a balanced and flavorful bite.

Shredded Bamboo Shoots Braised (30 NT$, portion). This one is slightly delicate and oily, but not dry or tough. Though the portion isn’t huge, it’s very satisfying.

Next up is the Clams and Pork Rib Soup (45 NT$, portion). It looks really old-school. Generally speaking, Xiong loves soups like this – classic Taiwanese flavors that get better the more you drink (though they can be MSG-heavy). But after drinking this, Xiong didn’t cough at all. The clams’ freshness paired really well with the pork ribs (or chicken), and this bowl of soup was spot-on. After Xiong and Miao fought over it for a bit, they quickly finished it all!!

Finally, let’s look at the Braised Pork Rice (30 NT$, small bowl). At first glance, the portion doesn’t seem small (for 30 NT$), with slightly more lean meat than pork skin, and it’s also less sticky.

The braising sauce has a slight sweetness, and it doesn’t stick to your mouth. Overall, it’s the texture that Xiong and Miao prefer (though those who love that sticky mouthfeel might find it a bit light). Bite by bite, it has a nostalgic flavor without being too heavy, and paired with the red braised pork, shredded bamboo shoots, and soup, it makes for a satisfying meal even if you’re not super hungry.

【Shuanglian Street Braised Pork Rice】
Address: No. 5, Shuanglian St., Datong District, Taipei City
Phone: (02) 2557-2367
Business Hours: 11:00 AM – 8:30 PM (Closed on Sundays)
Recommendation: The braised pork rice mainly uses lean, non-fatty meat, with moderate saltiness and oiliness (it goes for a light, slightly sweet flavor). But if you’re a fan of the gelatinous texture of pork skin, you might not prefer it as much. Paired with a few side dishes and soup, it makes for a very filling meal!!
