How much do you think this generous bowl of meatball soup costs? NT$50? NT$40? The answer is just NT$25!* This “Chekouluo Meatball” spot, located in the public Minsheng Market in Changhua City, is well known among locals — some have been eating here since childhood — making it a popular and iconic snack shop. After opening at 2 p.m., even on weekdays, the place is constantly bustling with customers. Although it stays open until 10 p.m., it’s possible they’ll sell out earlier.

The shop only offers three flavors: meatball soup, rice vermicelli with pork blood (mianxianhu), and a combo (meatball + meatball). But most customers go for the combo to enjoy both flavors. This time, I went straight for the meatball soup — and wow, the meatballs are big and plentiful. That’s because these meatballs are made with a mix of lean pork and fish paste, giving them a soft, tender texture that practically melts in your mouth after just a few bites. Unlike some meatballs that can have a slightly gummy or off texture, these are smooth and delicious.

While the richly thickened broth takes a backseat, skipping the usual shrimp paste seasoning actually highlights the natural sweetness of the cabbage and dried shrimp, pairing perfectly with the meatballs. And let’s not forget — those almost overflowing servings of meatballs offer unbeatable value for money.
