Breathing New Life into Scrap Metal – A Steel World Between Water Alleys and Landscape Art

Life-sized, vividly shaped, and expressive iron figures stand on both sides of the pathways, forming what seem like "iron avenues" to welcome the bustling crowds and guide disoriented visitors. This unique sight is one of the artworks featured at the Taoyuan Land Art Festival, titled “The Fantastic Iron World,” created by environmental iron sculptor Zheng Binghe.

Known as “Brother Bing,” Teacher Zheng Binghe originally ran a machinery factory and a recycling yard. On a whim, he used his mechanical knowledge and skilled hands, along with a wild imagination, to breathe new life into discarded scrap metal—turning it into robots beloved by both adults and children, and paving the way for his career in iron art.

Using waste materials for art has always been Zheng Binghe’s consistent practice. As someone who also works in recycling, he jokes that running a recycling yard ensures a never-ending supply of creative material. Beyond being a way to relieve work stress and express emotions, and aside from beautifying the environment through his works, Zheng Binghe hopes to promote the idea of “recycling waste for an eco-friendly lifestyle” through his creations. Drawing from his imagination and reflections on life, he incorporates various aspects of modern society into his pieces, often giving viewers unique insights.

Thanks to Zheng Binghe’s skillful arrangements, a rich variety of “iron figures” have appeared among the water alleys and sidewalks at the Taoyuan Land Art Festival, attracting passersby to stop and take photos. Many have praised his works not only for their creativity but also for giving them a new perspective on resource reuse.

Zheng Binghe also opens his workshop, where the iron sculptures are created, for public visits so people can see how these metal sheets come alive again through the artist’s ingenuity.
