New Ahong Japanese Cuisine: Fried Shrimp with Sea King Rice – Super Impressive Visuals and Unbeatable Value

Last updated 2026-09-25 — Around March this year, Bear and Meow visited Ahong Japanese Cuisine on Lane 737 in Neihu for the first time. The small shop could only accommodate about eight people, but Ahong, his wife, and their child worked hard in that tiny space. The first visit was amazing, and the second and third visits maintained the same high standard. Plus, the portion sizes and freshness of the ingredients were excellent, making it absolutely great value compared to many high-priced sashimi rice bowls.

New Ahong Japanese Cuisine has moved from Lane 737 to Neihu Road, offering an even better environment while maintaining top-notch ingredients. Fried shrimp N<搭炙烧三宝N<与海鲜霸王质量兼优。

Around March this year, Bear and Meow visited Ahong Japanese Cuisine on Lane 737 in Neihu for the first time.

Chef Ahong is very dedicated, doing almost everything himself. Though not much of a talker, he works hard behind the scenes, hoping to serve everyone fresh, quality ingredients without putting too much financial burden on them.

As a result, within a few months, Ahong Japanese Cuisine gained quite a following (with wait times of around an hour). Even though he’s too busy to chat or joke with customers, Ahong has always wanted to make the experience more comfortable for everyone. So, after half a year of planning and searching, Ahong finally decided to relocate to a spot closer to Gang o' Station on the MRT (also on Neihu Road)!

This is the new Ahong Japanese Cuisine. It still features simple, unpretentious decor, but the space is much larger than before.

The lantern symbolizing Ahong’s spirit, with its soft, non-glaring light, mirrors his personality—no flashy marketing, just a commitment to quality ingredients. Bear and Meow have tried many delicious foods and met many dedicated owners, but every time they see Ahong, they feel they’re not working hard enough.

When asked about future operations (previously open from 5 PM to midnight), Ahong revealed that due to ongoing staff reallocation, the initial hours will be from 12 PM to 2 PM, then 5 PM to 9 PM (closed Tuesdays).

If staffing improves in the future, they plan to introduce a late-night dining mode!! (Bear and Meow are super excited!!)

It was already around 8 PM (they don’t stop taking customers until 9 PM), and the shop still had plenty of diners.

The place maintains a simple, rustic Japanese style. From just eight seats to over 30 in the new shop, Bear observed for a while. Of course, there’s still room for improvement, but watching Ahong slice fish while serving customers gave Bear the feeling that hardworking people truly get their rewards. Aside from more seats and a comfier environment, there’s also a self-serve beverage station (and compared to the old shop, there’s finally a restroom!!)

They’ve also upgraded from manual billing to computerized receipts. Bear and Meow have seen all the effort along the way!! (There are even uniforms now—the new Ahong Japanese Cuisine really is different from before...)

Such a cute soy sauce bottle.

Now, onto the menu. Compared to the old Ahong days on Lane 737, aside from slight price adjustments on a few items, the highest-priced Sea King Rice Bowl (380 TWD) remains unchanged. For Chef Ahong, ensuring customers get great value is what matters most.

That day, besides Bear and Meow, there were also Sister and almost-Xiaofang, and the feast was absolutely amazing!!!

However, did you sharp-eyed readers notice? Besides the legendary Sea King Rice Bowl, the cooked dishes now include a new Grilled Triple Delight Rice Bowl (280 TWD). The food-loving Meow spotted it immediately and decided to give it a try.

Since everyone was hungry, the five of us ended up ordering this much all at once (we were starving, okay?). Let me briefly introduce the dishes: New Ahong now also offers a 60 TWD set meal (a bowl of soup + two side dishes), which adds more variety and keeps you fuller for longer!!

Isn’t that insane?

Here are the sides (from the 60 TWD set). They all have a rich Japanese flavor. The miso soup (included in the 60 TWD set, 25 TWD if ordered separately)—Bear really recommends it because it’s made with whole chunks of fish, not just fish heads or bones (every bite has actual meat).

This is the ever-popular Grilled Salmon Rice (190 TWD). Every bite delivers the rich, oily flavor of grilled salmon, and Bear and Meow couldn’t resist that sweet, savory taste.

This is the sashimi rice bowl (140 TWD) ordered by Sister—six thick slices of four types of sashimi with fish roe, definitely meeting high standards (compared to places that keep shrinking portions, Ahong is quite practical).

Next is the Grilled Mackerel Rice (160 TWD) ordered by Xiaofang. Bear has ordered it before too. The portion is medium-sized, but the perfectly grilled mackerel is the highlight. Among the Japanese meals Bear and Meow have tried, Ahong’s service isn’t fast, but because of the slow-and-steady approach, even with long waits, issues are rare.

Ten pieces of salmon (150 TWD). By this point, you’ll feel a rush of satisfaction!! Because this salmon is just perfect!! Every bite is rich and smooth, delicious without being greasy!!

The enthusiastic Ahong also treated Bear and Meow’s group to a grilled fish, which everyone fought over happily (food seems tastier when you fight for it, huh).

Next up, there’s a set of eight nigiri sushi (240 TWD). Bear and Meow highly recommend this one, as each piece has a unique flavor, perfect for those who love trying new things.

Finally, this is the new dish that sharp-eyed Meow ordered—the Grilled Triple Delight Rice Bowl (280 TWD).

An incredibly rich and satisfying bowl.

So, what exactly is the Grilled Triple Delight? It turns out to be grilled salmon on top, flounder fin meat in the middle, and conger eel at the bottom.

Among these three ingredients, salmon is the most common and the most basic version. The flounder fin meat and conger eel that follow are even more impressive. For those who aren’t big fans of raw or cold dishes, this bowl of Grilled Triple Delight rice is definitely an amazing choice!!

After seeing everyone else’s dishes, it turned out that Xiong hadn’t eaten yet. In addition to ordering a Seafood King Rice Bowl (380 TWD), seeing that others still seemed hungry, Xiong also added two more new dishes: Fried Shrimp Rice (160 TWD) and Fried Vegetables (80 TWD).

With a mix of hot and cold, raw and fried — it’s just too complete and satisfying!!

The coating on the fried vegetables isn’t too thick, and every bite lets you taste the sweet freshness of the vegetables (dipping them in light soy sauce is also a good idea).

And finally, here comes this bowl of Fried Shrimp Rice!! At first glance, it goes for the rich and abundant look — two fried shrimp standing tall on top of the rice, creating a very strong visual impact.

Since the focus is on fresh ingredients, the shrimp itself is naturally sweet and juicy. Paired with a coating that doesn’t scrape your mouth, along with vegetables like eggplant, and served with rice drizzled in sauce, it’s super filling when eaten together. Plus, the crispy bits of fried coating also become a flavorful supporting role — it’s really delicious!!

It seems that Shin A-Hong not only offers a more comfortable environment but also expands its menu beyond just fresh seafood dishes!! Even friends who are hesitant about sashimi can now enjoy a hearty meal at Shin A-Hong!!
