Enjoy free gourmet food！ The Kaohsiung Mullet Culture Festival kicks off on the 14th

The Mullet Culture Festival in Qieding District, Kaohsiung, will begin at 10 a.m. on the 14th at Xingda Harbor’s Lover’s Wharf. In addition to activities such as a bike tour of Qieding, a mullet culture exhibition, and a mullet sales rush, limited-edition golden mullet rice noodles will also be prepared for the public to enjoy.

Due to fluctuations in supply costs, the price of mullet roe this year has risen by about 20%. The Mullet Culture Festival is offering special pricing — originally priced at NT$1,200, the mullet roe will be available for just NT$900, allowing visitors not only to explore Qieding, learn about mullet roe, but also to take home this delicacy as a souvenir at a discounted price.

Starting in the morning, the event will feature an agricultural and fishery product fair, live band performances, a mini mullet class, free tastings of golden mullet rice noodles, a demonstration by expert mullet filleters, a mullet sales rush, taiko drum performances, a fireworks show, and performances by artists Zhuang Zhenkai and Dai Meijun.

Every year, around ten days before and after the winter solstice, mullet swim back to Taiwan’s coastal waters. Thanks to Qieding’s unique geography and climate, mullet gather here in large numbers, making it one of Taiwan’s most famous regions for mullet and mullet roe production. Additionally, mullet roe comes in both dried and wet varieties — currently, wet mullet roe is priced at approximately NT$1,200 to NT$1,300 per catty, while dried mullet roe ranges from NT$1,200 to NT$3,000 depending on quality.
