Located in the Lintianshan Cultural Park in Fenglin Township, Hualien County, Senrong Church has created a Christmas tree about five meters tall using recycled plastic bottles. During the day, it looks dreamy like a snow scene, and at night, when lit up, it shines brilliantly in vibrant colors, adding a strong festive Christmas atmosphere to the nights of Lintianshan.
According to the Hualien Forest District Office, Senrong Church was built in 1967, during the heyday of the Lintianshan logging industry, which formed a thriving community that brought together people from various places and ethnic groups. A group of forestry workers raised funds, and people of all ages joined in the church construction efforts, manually carrying stones, sand, steel bars, and cement. Through their united efforts, they eventually completed a permanent place of worship.

With the decline of the logging industry and a serious outflow of young people, there are now only around 20 regular church attendees, mostly elderly. As Christmas approaches this year, the financially struggling church had no funds to buy a Christmas tree, so they came up with the idea to create an eco-friendly yet festive Christmas tree using recycled plastic bottles collected by church members. Its beautiful appearance is also full of ingenuity.
Wu Kun-ming, director of the Hualien Forest District Office, said that traditional Christmas trees were made from coniferous branches, but although most are now replaced with plastic products, these take up a lot of storage space and also burden the environment. Senrong Church has given new life to recycled plastic bottles and has created a unique Christmas scene, making it an excellent example of waste reuse. Tourists are also welcome to visit the Lintianshan Cultural Park to admire this environmentally friendly and creative Christmas tree.

According to the Hualien Forest Management Office’s website, “Lintianshan Forest” is a small, isolated mountain town administratively under Fenglin Township, Hualien County. During the Japanese colonial period, due to the impact of World War II, the Taiwan Shinsei Corporation faced a shortage of papermaking raw materials, so it chose the hemlock and spruce in the Lintianshan area of eastern Taiwan as papermaking material and began logging operations from there.
Lintianshan is also known as “Morisaka,” pronounced in Japanese as “Morisaka,” meaning a forest-covered slope. Lintianshan forestry workers commonly referred to the logging base by the Wanli River as the “forest site” or “Morisaka.” After the recovery of Taiwan, “Morisaka” was renamed “Senrong.” Therefore, terms such as “Lintianshan,” “forest site,” “Morisaka,” “Lintianshan Forest,” and “Senrong” all refer to the same place.
The timber transport railway in Lintianshan totaled nearly 60 kilometers. In 1983, the approximately 47-kilometer Lintianshan Timber Transport Road was completed and opened to traffic, and timber transport was entirely switched to large trucks, marking the end of the forest railway and cableway era. Starting in 2001, the Hualien Forest District Office planned the forest site as the “Lintianshan Forestry Cultural Park,” systematically preserving the history of the forest site. After years of effort, it has become a veritable museum of Taiwan’s forestry industry.
