Teen girls in Taipei’s East District are obsessed with this cozy bar—“Beauty and the Beast” romantic cocktails that smoke up the place

Do you know what romantic means to girls? A newly opened wine bar in Taipei’s East District this year features over 70 unique cocktails, one of which is the “Beauty and the Beast” rose cocktail. When the lid is lifted, smoke wafts out with a rich fragrance, and there’s even a flower inside the drink—super dreamy visuals.

A group of hairstylists, modeling agents, and bartenders who are passionate about food and drinks came together in July this year to establish Chinese Whispers Wine Bar. They wanted to create a space where people could slow down, enjoy some good food and drinks, and share private conversations. Initially, there was no drink menu, but they felt it lacked a unique signature, so they designed 30 exclusive cocktails for Chinese Whispers, along with 50 classic ones. Now the menu offers over 70 drinks, refreshed every three months—for example, November’s theme was tea-infused cocktails.

The most popular drink among girls here is the “Beauty and the Beast,” inspired by a group of Russian models. That day, they were wearing rose-scented perfume, as if they were going to a wedding. This led to thoughts of the rose in Beauty and the Beast, resulting in the creation of this cocktail.
A “Beauty and the Beast” cocktail costs 350 TWD. The base spirit, Ciroc, is a grape-flavored vodka, mixed with fresh cantaloupe, a bit of freshly squeezed lemon, and cooked rose syrup. The top layer is adorned with flowers and petals. Bar manager Eason says the flowers on top are purchased weekly, so the variety changes depending on what’s in bloom that week.

The entire cocktail is covered with a glass dome and presented to the customer. When opened, it releases swirling smoke, possibly rose-scented, or maybe osmanthus or mint. Once the smoke clears, you’ll see a pink-hued cocktail decorated with flowers, sure to capture any girl’s heart—it’s also perfect for a confession, with a romance level of 100%.

Recently, they also launched a limited-time bubble tea cocktail available only on Fridays and Saturdays—it’s quite unique. Another popular cocktail, priced at 320 TWD, is called “Once You Try This at Chinese Whispers, You’ll Really Fall for It.” It’s a matcha-themed cocktail but without the bitterness. The shop owners were drawn to matcha’s green color, so they used Japanese matcha, ume liqueur, and malted milk liquor to create the blend, then topped it with whipped cream and a bit of sugar to harmonize the flavors. The bartender may also draw different patterns on the whipped cream based on their mood or inspiration of the day.
