Walking along Anping Road and strolling by the water, you’ll easily spot “Wenzhang Beef Soup” thanks to its large roadside signboard that prominently displays the shop name, with a constant stream of customers at the entrance. In front of the store, there's a small stall piled with bright red, fresh, warm beef. Owner Cai Wenzhang stands at the doorway, continuously slicing thin pieces of beef with a sharp knife. “This is beef loin — tender but not overly soft.”

Owner Cai Wenzhang was originally a fisherman, but after an electrical fire destroyed his boat and cost him his livelihood, he was left with nothing. Cai Wenzhang said that one day, while wandering the streets feeling lost, he saw someone leading a cow by and the idea of selling beef soup popped into his head, prompting him to give it a try.

Using beef brisket, beef bones, onions, and Chinese medicinal herbs, Cai Wenzhang carefully experimented with various flavors until he finally created the unique taste that defines “Wenzhang Beef Soup.” Though the broth may look clear, it’s rich in depth. The first sip brings the aroma of fresh beef, followed by the sweetness of the onion, and finally, a subtle hint of traditional Chinese medicine lingers on the palate. A single bowl carries layers of flavor, much like Cai Wenzhang himself — having experienced life’s ups and downs, and shaped by them.

Ordering a bowl of soup at “Wenzhang Beef Soup” also comes with a choice of pork or beef minced rice, as well as plain white rice. The beef minced rice, in particular, has a rich buttery aroma, and when the meat juices are mixed with the rice, the beef flavor becomes exceptionally delicious. As for the beef soup, freshly sliced warm beef is placed in the bowl and briefly blanched in the piping hot broth before serving. The pink-hued slices, after blanching, reveal the delicate grain of fresh beef. One bite of the minced rice paired with the beef broth is pure Tainan-style gourmet heaven.
