Busty Flower Fairies Promote Tulip Season in Taichung

Because of the late harvest of Dutch bulbs, the tulip season at the Zhongshe Sightseeing Flower Market in Taichung was postponed by half a month and officially opened on the 7th. Slim bikini models dressed as flower fairies took part in a bridal parade, bringing tulips into the flower fields. The Zhongshe Sightseeing Flower Market has held its tulip season event for the 11th consecutive year before Lunar New Year. This year, due to the delayed harvest in the Netherlands, to meet the Lunar New Year exhibition schedule, the flower market operators used air freight to bring 150,000 tulip bulbs to Taiwan. Today, a bridal parade featuring scantily-clad, busty flower fairies kicked off the official start of the tulip season at Zhongshe Flower Market.

It is also the only flower market in central Taiwan that successfully grows tulips at low altitudes. Various colored tulips bloom in the European-style garden, attracting many visitors each year for photos and sightseeing.

Lai Chi-wen, head of the Zhongshe Sightseeing Flower Market, said that the cost of one tulip bulb is NT$20, and with shipping and planting expenses, the 150,000 tulips cost nearly NT$10 million. Industry insiders noted that the tulip blooming period is short—only about seven days—so new tulips are continuously replaced during the exhibition.

To welcome the Lunar New Year tourist crowds, in addition to the tulip season, the operators planted various flowers and plants including lilies, pink salvia, scarlet sage, and roses across the six-hectare colorful flower fields, adding romance and an exotic flair to the European-style garden. The tulip blooms are expected to last until mid-March.

The Zhongshe Sightseeing Flower Market also announced its business hours from New Year’s Eve to the fifth day of the Lunar New Year. On New Year’s Eve, the barbecue area will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the potted plant and flower field areas from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. From the first to the fifth day of the New Year, the barbecue area will operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the potted plant and flower field areas from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
