World’s Safest Airlines in 2013: EVA Air Ranks Eighth

With as many as 448 airlines worldwide, which ones are the “safest”?The international airline rating website Airline Ratings recently released its 2013 list of the world’s safest airlines, with Qantas of Australia taking the top spot, while Taiwan’s EVA Air also earned the honor of eighth place.

The top ten airlines on the list are, in order: Qantas, Air New Zealand, Emirates, United Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Singapore Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, EVA Air, All Nippon Airways, and Royal Jordanian.Airline Ratings evaluates global airlines based on factors including safety records, regulatory oversight, the quality of in-flight products, as well as entertainment and food options during flights. Airlines that have had no fatal accidents in the past ten years receive bonus points. This does not include incidents caused by non-airline-related issues such as terrorist attacks or hijackings. According to the website, Qantas has had no fatal safety incidents since 1951, earning it the top overall ranking.

Additionally, the airlines ranked lowest in safety are Afghanistan’s Kam Air, Kazakhstan’s Scat Airlines, and Suriname’s Blue Wing Airlines in South America.The website also noted that 2013 saw the fewest number of aviation safety incidents in 68 years, with a total of 29 accidents resulting in 269 fatalities.
