Standing 333 meters tall, Tokyo Tower has been decorated with 333 carp streamers and a 6-meter-long saury flag on its front plaza from last month through this weekend, May 7. With the blue sky and the red tower in the background, the carp streamers soar gracefully in the spring breeze — making it one of the must-see spots when visiting Tokyo in spring.

On May 5th in Japan, carp streamers can be seen fluttering everywhere on the streets. The Tokyo Skytree in Asakusa, standing at a height of 634 meters, displays 634 carp streamers. Upon closer inspection, some of the streamers even feature flags of various countries. Below, there are also many seating tables and chairs set up, allowing people to sit, dine, and enjoy Tokyo’s pleasant May sunshine.

In addition to Tokyo’s iconic landmarks, Osaka’s Asakawa Sakura Embankment Park is also a popular spot. Along the riverbank of the park, 1,000 carp streamers are hung, stretching across the Asakawa River. Various traditional and hand-painted carp streamers “burst with energy,” attracting families and couples to come out for a spring walk. Beside them, golden-yellow rapeseed flowers can also be seen, creating one of the most beautiful scenes of Japanese daily life during the transition from spring to summer.
