Seats too small or want to upgrade? Airlines roll out bidding for 'no-neighbor seats'

Is the economy class seat too cramped for your international flight, or do you want a luxury cabin but lack the budget? Nowadays, several international airlines are introducing new promotional measures, allowing passengers to bid for adjacent empty seats or upgrades. With discounted prices, travelers can secure more spacious seating and additional services, while airlines can also boost their flight revenue.

Etihad Airways, which was ranked among the top three in the "Fly Quiet and Clean league table" last week, recently announced the launch of an 'no-neighbor seat' bidding service. Starting in early July, passengers will be able to place bids online during booking for multiple seats, securing extra space next to them at attractive prices. Successful bids will be confirmed 30 hours before departure.

This isn't the first time airlines have opened seat bidding to passengers. In March this year, Air Canada also announced that it would allow travelers to bid for cabin upgrades, auctioning premium economy or business class seats on selected flights. This gives originally economy-class passengers the chance to upgrade at a discount, saving on travel costs while bringing extra income to the airline. In addition, airlines such as Air China, Swiss Air Lines, and Qantas Airways also offer bidding options.
