Head to the Capital of the Arctic to Witness Nature’s Fireworks Show

Not satisfied with the dazzling fireworks in the corner of the city? Then head north to witness a breathtaking celestial fireworks show staged by Mother Nature herself. Legend has it that seeing the aurora borealis can bring lifelong happiness. In Murmansk, Russia — known as the “Capital of the Arctic” — just by looking up, you might easily catch a glimpse of that happiness.

Unlike other icy worlds within the polar circle, Murmansk benefits from the North Atlantic Current, keeping its port ice-free all year round. Its climate is milder than other cities at similar latitudes, and being deep within the Arctic Circle with long polar nights means the chances of seeing the aurora are quite high. It’s said that if the weather is favorable, staying for just 3 to 4 days can yield up to a 90% chance of an aurora sighting.

From Murmansk, venture across a vast expanse of silver-white land to reach Teriberka. Originally an important fishing hub and strategic location on the Barents Sea, the town gradually declined as its shipbuilding industry fell into ruin, eventually becoming a graveyard for wrecked and abandoned vessels in the Arctic Ocean.

However, even though Teriberka lacks elaborately constructed man-made landscapes or vividly colorful scenes, its unique beauty of decay attracts many visitors seeking a sense of melancholy and solitude that is hard to find amid the hustle and bustle of the city.
