Australia’s Whitehaven Beach: A Real-Life Mermaid Spotted?

Renowned as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Whitehaven Beach is made up of pure white quartz sand. To welcome Chinese travelers visiting during the Lunar New Year, Cruise Whitsundays and Hamilton Island jointly organized a sand sculpture event. They invited Dennis Massoud, the world champion of sand sculpture who spent five years creating sand art in China’s Gobi Desert, to hand-carve a life-size horse. From January 31 (Friday) to February 6 (Thursday), Massoud will create sculptures on-site at Whitehaven Beach and guide visitors in making mini sand sculptures each day.

Phillipa Harrison, Sales General Manager of Cruise Whitsundays, said that the number of group travelers from China has doubled compared to the same period last year. Therefore, they have specially created a festive atmosphere to celebrate the Lunar New Year for Chinese tourists on Hamilton Island. Street stalls will be set up and a Chinese dragon dance performance will be held. They hope all Chinese visitors will come to Whitehaven Beach not only to enjoy the stunning iconic scenery of the Whitsunday Islands but also to view sand sculptures with unique “Year of the Horse” themes during the Chinese New Year.
