The enchanting "autumn foliage" scenery of Checheng Town—explore history while wandering leisurely

Coming to Checheng from Wusong] feels like stepping into another time and space—a nostalgic mountain town with the most pristine Japanese-style scenery, the beautiful Checheng Railway Station, and the evocative old street that gives those who grew up in the countryside a truly heartwarming sense of going back in time.

I really love the lake and mountain views here, as well as the bald cypress and sweetgum trees surrounding the water, the ducks swimming on the surface, and the sight of visitors strolling along the lake... A quaint small-town charm naturally emerges here.

Checheng, a town once forgotten in the mountains, was bustling during the peak of the logging industry in the early days. When logging declined, it quietly faded away, leaving behind old houses that couldn’t be taken away and an old street full of memories.


In the early days, Checheng was a transfer station for manpower carts. Due to its flat and spacious terrain, hundreds of light carts were often parked there, so people began calling the place "Chēchǎng" (literally "cart yard" in Taiwanese), which later became pronounced as "Checheng" due to similar sounds and has remained so to this day.

The bald cypress trees by the lake have turned from yellow to red, and their reflections in the water are even more captivating, resembling paintings that delight the eye.


The "Log Pond" is an artificial pool used during the Zhenchang Timber Industry period to soak logs. Now, after planning, reorganization, and greening by the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration, it has become a great spot for office workers to unwind.


Accidentally in the frame? I saw a couple taking wedding photos under the crimson maple trees—it’s the most beautiful scene and a lifetime of wonderful memories.

In winter, plants change dramatically and are filled with different colors. It’s a bit late for maple leaf viewing now, as most of the red leaves have fallen to the ground, but the ground covered in red leaves is also beautiful.


Take a leisurely walk around the lake, where egrets are regular elegant residents.

As deep winter arrives, most of the maple leaves have turned yellow and fallen, but the maple leaves by the Checheng Tourist Center now reflect in the pool, resembling an oil painting that’s truly intoxicating.




The wood collected in the "Checheng Timber Industry Museum" still retains some traces of history...

The "last train station"—Checheng is the final stop of the Nantou Jiji branch line and also the most beloved stop for travelers on this route. If you want to leave behind joyful memories here, consider taking a nostalgic train journey.


Stroll along the classic railway tracks, listen to the murmuring stream, gaze at the majestic power plant buildings and mountain scenery above, and you can feel as if you’re in a quiet village from the 1950s—a truly pleasant experience.


During the 921 earthquake, the "Checheng Station" suffered severe damage. The current station was later rebuilt, with much of the construction using logs. Not only was the main building wrapped in logs, but even the square in front of the station was paved with them.

The long railway tracks and the small town of Checheng let travelers leave behind nostalgic and joyful memories here.
