Top 100 Global City Destinations: Taipei Beats Tokyo to Rank 18th

Euromonitor International, a highly influential and authoritative market research company founded in 1972, recently published its latest “Top 100 City Destinations Ranking.” Taipei ranked 18th, surpassing cities such as Tokyo, Amsterdam, Shanghai, Las Vegas, and Beijing, marking a three-place improvement from last year’s 21st spot.

Euromonitor International released the latest “Top 100 City Destinations Ranking” on January 27, 2014. The top 20 cities are Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, London, Macau, Kuala Lumpur, Shenzhen, New York, Antalya, Paris, Istanbul, Rome, Dubai, Guangzhou, Phuket, Mecca, Pattaya,Taipei, Prague, and Shanghai.

Euromonitor International publishes the “Top 100 City Destinations Ranking” annually and analyzes the tourism status and competitiveness of various cities. A “tourist destination” refers toa location that possesses specific tourism resources, including tourist activities, ground facilities, transportation options, and market demand. A higher ranking indicates greater tourism appeal and the ability to attract repeat visits.

Taipei boasts unique tourism resources. In terms of nature, visitors can enjoy mountain views, hot springs, and river scenery within a short distance, such as Yangmingshan, Maokong, Beitou Hot Springs, and the Blue Highway — all attractions that encourage return visits. Its rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality also leave a deep impression on tourists, while innovative thinking and infrastructure have earned Taipei the title of “2016 World Design Capital.”

Moreover, Taipei frequently captures the attention of international media for its cuisine and transportation. For instance, international media outlet CNN once featured Taiwanese street food on its website, highlighting stinky tofu and pepper buns from Raohe Night Market. The renowned global travel magazine Global Traveler has also praised the convenience of Taipei’s YouBike system.
