No admission fee at the Taipei 228 Memorial Hall in February

To commemorate the 228 Incident, promote historical education, and foster ethnic harmony, the Taipei City Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs has designated every February as a promotional month. Throughout the entire month of February, admission to the Taipei 228 Memorial Hall is “free of charge” (normally NT$20), and special dates have been added during which entry is also free, allowing the public to better understand this period of history.

The Department of Cultural Affairs stated that to help students better understand the 228 Incident, all currently enrolled students from elementary to high school can visit free of charge. The expanded list of those eligible for free admission also includescertified volunteer traffic police, volunteer police officers, and volunteer firefighters; victims of the 228 Incident and their families; individuals under 12 years old or over 65 years old; people with disabilities and one necessary accompanying person; as well as those holding a tour guide certificate issued by the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.The number of free admission days has also been increased from the original three (228 Memorial Day, International Museum Day on May 18, and World Human Rights Day on December 10) tothe entire month of February as the 228 Incident Promotional Month (free admission throughout February), in addition to national holidays such as Labor Day and Armed Forces Day, which are also free.。

Taipei 228 Memorial Hall Information:
Located at No. 3 Ketagalan Boulevard, at the corner of the 228 Peace Park, the Taipei 228 Memorial Hall was originally the site of the Taipei Broadcasting Bureau during the Japanese colonial period. After the Nationalist government took over, it became the Taiwan Broadcasting Corporation. The 228 Incident spread rapidly across Taiwan through radio broadcasts. The Taipei 228 Memorial Hall officially opened on February 28, 1997—50 years after the 228 Incident—and has been in operation for 17 years. It is the first museum in the country dedicated to commemorating the 228 Incident and houses the richest collection of historical materials and artifacts related to the incident. Its mission is to publicly share historical records, provide solace to the families of victims, and to reconstruct a shared historical memory for the people of Taiwan through deep reflection on this tragic event. By establishing the memorial hall, the goal is to transform suffering into a force for progress and renewal, promote ethnic harmony and co-prosperity, and foster the healthy development of society and culture.
