New York Times Recommends Must-Visit Attractions in Taiwan, with Keelung’s NMNS Also on the List

After a 24-year wait, the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology (NMNS) in Keelung officially opened on January 26 and has already attracted over 120,000 visitors. As the world’s only museum that integrates marine science, technology, ecology, culture, and local environmental beauty, it was specially recommended by the New York Times in their January...“52 Places to Go in 2014”report, where the NMNS in Keelung was specially recommended as one of the must-visit attractions in Taiwan.

In January, the New York Times published their list of 52 countries or destinations they believe are a must-visit in 2014, with Taiwan ranking 11th. The New York Times noted that although Taiwan is roughly the same size as the Netherlands, its convenient public transportation system allows tourists to easily transition from urban areas into nature, experiencing both city life and the joys of natural landscapes during their trip. Taipei City was also selected as the “2016 World Design Capital,” and it is believed that even more attractions will draw visitors in the future.

Among the recommended attractions,the New York Times highlighted not only Kenting National Park, night markets, and street food but also the newly opened NMNS in Keelung.In addition to the museum’s own exhibits, the NMNS connects surrounding scenic areas via walking trails (such as Badouzi Fishing Port). It is also currently the only museum in Taiwan with its own train platform. Visitors can first take the “most beautiful railway branch line in Taiwan,” the Shen’ao Line, to enjoy the stunning mountain and coastal scenery along the way before entering the museum to explore its exhibitions, making it a great destination for travel in northern Taiwan.

The NMNS team expressed great honor in being featured in international media. The museum further stated that they plan to complete the “Marine Ecology Pavilion” by 2017, and everyone is encouraged to stay tuned.
