The southern runway at Taoyuan Airport to close for a year for renovation; upgrades will enable A380 operations

From February 19 to January 15, 2015, Taoyuan International Airport will close the southern runway (05R/23L) for construction to enhance runway functionality, during which single-runway operations will be implemented.
According to Taoyuan Airport Corporation, the runway resurfacing project has a total budget of NT$10.7 billion. It will be carried out in five phases: renovating the NC taxiway, renovating and extending the 05R-23L runway to 3,800 meters, renovating the southern taxiway, renovating the 05L-23R runway, and renovating the northern taxiway.Upon completion, all airside facilities will be upgraded to meet 4F standards (i.e., capable of handling large aircraft such as the A380), with navigation aids and lighting systems upgraded, and an advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) will be installed.(A-SMGCS).

Taoyuan Airport Corporation also pointed out that during the runway construction phase, the airport will operate with a single runway. Based on the current flight schedule, peak-hour takeoffs and landings reach 36 per hour, while the single-runway capacity is 30 per hour, soflight delays are expected during single-runway operations..
To address this situation, the airport company has started early preparations, including managing flight time slots, coordinating with air traffic control units, and adjusting aircraft separation times. In addition, sufficient manpower and resources have been prepared to promptly repair the runway in case of emergencies, ensuring the normal operation of runways, aprons, and taxiways.
While some members of the public are concerned about potential "flight congestion," some netizens optimistically noted that photographers who enjoy plane spotting now only need to keep an eye on one runway.
