As a hands-on way to promote “environmental protection” and deepen understanding of “environmental ethics,” Kenting National Park’s long-running and well-received “Working Holiday” Bay Island Heart Experience is just such an event. Three sessions will be held starting March 15, with registration now open on the Kenting National Park official website.

The two-day, one-night event kicks off with a “Hands-On DIY” session, where participants use “black beans” — promoted through local agricultural guidance in the Gangkou community — to experience the magic of low-carbon cooking. They’ll also hand-pick tea leaves nourished by mountain winds and sea spray from Taiwan’s southernmost tea fields, then enjoy a tasting of limited-edition handmade Gangkou tea. The lingering aftertaste carries the echoes of thought-provoking melodies. There’s also a “marine debris” workshop, featuring expert speakers sharing fascinating stories about the bizarre flotsam found across the world’s shores.

The highlight of the second day is the “Working Holiday” Bay Island Heart Experience. “Bay Island” lies between Jialeshuei and Nantian, along the yet-to-be-developed stretch of Provincial Highway 26, preserving its mysterious veil, pristine coastline, and natural ecology. Yet, this beautiful shoreline is littered with trash and debris washed ashore by tides and northeast monsoons. By joining forces to collect these non-biodegradable marine wastes carried from around the globe, participants help restore this stunning, untouched final stretch of coast to its original clean state.
