Yuan Zai leaves home to star in a movie — after strolling through Shenkeng Old Street, head to Pingxi to release sky lanterns

To encourage more people to explore Shiding and Pingxi using the “Taiwan Tourist Shuttle,” the New Taipei City Government has specially planned the “Pingxi Mini-Tour” event, allowing travelers to enjoy the full experience of “seeing Yuan Zai in Shiding, tasting tofu in Shenkeng, and releasing sky lanterns in Pingxi.”
To promote the “Pingxi Mini-Tour,” the New Taipei City Tourism Bureau also invited up-and-coming director Tang Peizhen to create four KUSO-themed short films inspired by Yuan Zai’s adorable behavior:“Just Go”,“Just Eat”,“Just Play”and“Sky Lantern”.
The videos depict Yuan Zai leaving home for a trip, taking the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle to Shenkeng to eat tofu, visiting Pingxi Old Street, and even acting cute in front of the soon-to-be-completed Sky Lantern Police Station.
One of the most memorable moments is when Yuan Zai releases a 4-foot Yuan Zai-shaped sky lantern, writing wishes on it such as“Get rid of my dark circles!”and“I want to take a color photo!”. Many netizens left comments saying, “It’s so healing and adorable!”

As a devoted fan of Yuan Zai, director Tang Peizhen said the idea for the films was inspired by portraying Yuan Zai and her mom Yuan Yuan as a mother-daughter duo, simulating the mood and feeling of a family trip and creating the atmosphere of a road movie. Through their journey, audiences can get to know the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle’s Pingxi Line better.
Tang Peizhen also mentioned that during filming, many locals were very willing to provide locations, assistance, and even act as extras for Yuan Yuan and Yuan Zai, which made the crew deeply feel the charm of Yuan Zai.
The New Taipei City Government stated that the “Taiwan Tourist Shuttle: Shiding-Pingxi Line Sightseeing Bus Service,” launched in February 2013, not only helps alleviate the crowding on the Taiwan Railways Pingxi Line but also offers travelers a different way to explore the area. Since its launch, it has received many positive reviews from visitors.

In addition, with the birth of panda cub Yuan Zai at the Shiding Zoo, who has become a superstar there, the New Taipei City Government has repeatedly collaborated with the Taipei City Government. Aside from creating a giant 15-foot “Yuan Zai Sky Lantern” for this year’s Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival,the 4-foot Yuan Zai mini sky lantern released in the video is also a limited-edition item prepared for participants of the “Pingxi Mini-Tour,” with only 800 available in total.It is hoped that by combining Yuan Zai’s charm with the convenience of the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle, the “Pingxi Mini-Tour” route connecting Shiding and Pingxi will be further promoted.
The New Taipei City Tourism Bureau also noted that the Sky Lantern Police Station featured in the “Sky Lantern” film has completed its main structure, with its first-floor restroom opened ahead of schedule during the Spring Festival holiday for the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival. As for the police station itself,it will officially open on March 14.Electronic sky lanterns will also be available for the public to release at that time. The registration details for the "Pingxi Mini Trip" will be announced by the end of February.
