Step into the Korean Folk Village & Travel Back to the Era of Professor Do from "My Love from the Star"

Even without the boost from "My Love from the Star," the "Korean Folk Village" in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea — which preserves the lifestyle of the late Joseon Dynasty — is a must-visit destination for travelers exploring Korean history and culture, as well as the filming location of many famous Korean historical dramas.

The "Korean Folk Village" is located in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, covering an area of approximately 300,000 pyeong. It primarily showcases the different cultures, beliefs, and customs of the various social classes — scholars, farmers, artisans, and merchants — of the late Joseon Dynasty, as well as the residences of commoners, the homes of noble yangban families, and even exhibits such as an interrogation torture chamber and government offices. To enhance the immersive experience, all staff members wear traditional hanbok, making visitors feel as though they’ve stepped back in time to the Joseon era. In the drama, Do Min-joon, who has just arrived on Earth from another planet, is set in the Joseon period, and multiple scenes were filmed here.

Additionally, as the venue for numerous popular Korean dramas — ranging from the classic "Dae Jang Geum" to more recent hits like "The Moon Embracing the Sun" and "Rooftop Prince" — the village also features life-sized cutouts of characters from these shows, allowing fans to take photos with them at the actual filming spots. Beyond historical architecture, the village regularly hosts performances of traditional Korean culture such as nongak (farmers' music), traditional weddings, and tightrope walking at scheduled times. Seasonal events are also held throughout the year. Traditional Korean snacks such as rice cakes and mung bean pancakes are sold at the village market.

However, the Korean Folk Village isn’t only about introducing Korean history and culture. On the other side of the park, there’s a modern-themed amusement area
that introduces the diverse customs and traditions of countries from around the world. Buildings representing different nations are constructed in styles authentic to their cultures, with flags displayed at the entrances to indicate which country’s culture is featured inside. Some of the international buildings showcase the traditions of two different countries. Just across a river, you can feel as if you've traveled instantly from Asia to Europe, creating a time-travel-like illusion — another highlight of the Korean Folk Village.
