In addition to providing rest for hikers, mountain huts also serve as emergency shelters. The "Solvay Hut," a small wooden cabin located on the northeast side of the Matterhorn in Switzerland, sits atop a high mountain at 13,000 feet. What makes it particularly unique is that it is perched right on the edge of a cliff—venturing too far outward could have dire consequences. However, from this vantage point, visitors can enjoy the stunning surrounding mountain scenery, and the snow-covered landscape in winter is especially mesmerizing.

According to Oddity Central, the Solvay Hut is owned by the Alpine Club and is located about 1,500 feet from the summit, roughly two-thirds of the way up the mountain. The hut was originally built as an emergency shelter for mountaineers in distress, but over time, it has also been opened to reward hardy hikers who make the climb, allowing them to admire the nearby Monte Rosa peak and take beautiful photos.

The hut was first constructed in 1915, with materials transported to the high-altitude site using animals and a small, simple cable car. The entire construction process took just five days. The hut was renovated in 1966, and an emergency telephone line was installed in 1976. It currently accommodates about 10 people at a time.

The hut is named "Solvay" after Ernest Solvay, a Belgian businessman who was passionate about climbing the Matterhorn and donated the funds for its construction, hence the name. Having long enjoyed the mountaineering joys this peak offered, he built the hut out of gratitude.

The report mentions that the Solvay Hut is a once-in-a-lifetime destination, whether for climbers or casual visitors. Hikers can spend the whole day here, while regular tourists will also enjoy capturing the stunning scenery.
