Atayal women showcase “traditional weaving fashion”

Atayal weaving can also be very fashionable！From April 3 to May 18, the Yilan County Government Cultural Affairs Bureau held the “Community Crafts – Atayal Weaving” exhibition at the Luodong Cultural Factory, centered around the theme of combining tradition and modernity. The event invited master artisans Yan Shuzhen and Bai Lieyouming to collaborate on the curation, presenting a series of innovative works that blend old and new elements. The aim is to allow the public to experience a fresh take on traditional techniques through this exhibition and accompanying workshops.

Lin Chiu-fang, Director of the Yilan County Government Cultural Affairs Bureau, stated that this exhibition, which combines community crafts with Atayal weaving, highlights the diverse cultural landscape of Yilan. The county government is actively promoting the preservation and inheritance of community culture, enabling local traditional culture to thrive in various aspects such as daily life, education, and the arts—realizing the vision of “Creative Cities and Counties, Happy Yilan.”

The exhibiting Atayal weaving artisan, Yan Shuzhen, is the head of the “Inahakauliu Ancient” workshop and has extensive experience in teaching weaving. Over the years, she has accumulated a wide range of works that integrate both traditional and modern elements, creating a contemporary style in fashion. She also brought handwoven textiles made from 100% ramie and manually processed with century-old techniques, offering visitors a visual feast.

Weaving is an essential skill for traditional Atayal women and a key force in connecting interpersonal relationships, stabilizing tribal life, and passing down culture within the Atayal community. With a long history of weaving among Taiwan’s indigenous peoples, the styles are incredibly diverse. Yan Shuzhen, who has long promoted Atayal weaving art, shared that during her visits to various tribes to teach the craft, she encountered many Atayal women who rediscovered their cultural attitudes toward life through weaving. This experience strengthened her belief that “cultural heritage” is not just a slogan but a long-term commitment.

The exhibition runs from April 3 to May 18. During the exhibition period, every weekend from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, a “Taiya Weaving DIY Workshop” will be held every 30 minutes. For participation, please contact 03-9577440 ext. 200.
