4 principles for firefly watching: don’t catch, don’t trespass on habitats, don’t use lights, and don’t make noise

The flickering of fireflies at Dongshi Forest Farm officially heralds the arrival of firefly season. However, as people head out to admire these glowing insects, Dongshi Forest Farm reminds everyone to observe four key principles: “do not catch fireflies,” “do not trespass into their habitats,” “do not use lights that disturb them,” and “do not make loud noises.”

Although firefly watching usually takes place in the evening, the New Taipei City Agriculture Bureau advises against using flashlights or other lighting devices. If necessary, cover the light source with red or dark-colored cellophane to minimize disturbance to the fireflies. Photography enthusiasts are also reminded to turn off their camera flashes—not only to avoid disturbing the fireflies but also to prevent disrupting others who are taking photos.

Additionally, when setting up equipment such as camera tripods, please place them carefully. Whether you're taking photos or watching fireflies, avoid trampling on the grass and damaging vegetation, and do not get too close to firefly habitats to prevent harm to the ecosystem.

Finally, most importantly, do not catch fireflies—even if you plan to release them afterward. During this period, fireflies exist primarily to mate, and if they come into contact with human scent, potential mates will avoid them.
