The Meilin hiking trails run from south to north and consist of four main paths: Meilong Trail, Guanyin Trail, Meifeng Trail, and Wulong Trail. Among the peaks of Meilin, Zhuzijian Mountain and Meifeng are considered the easiest ridge routes for hikers. Zhuzijian Mountain offers great views over the Chianan Plain, with sunrises visible to the east and sunsets to the west. After a hike, visitors can experience farm life, enjoy a farm-style meal, and then head to Wulong Trail to watch fireflies. Experiencing both the morning and evening beauty of Meilin, along with the sounds of wildlife and insects, is a rare and memorable encounter.

The majority of fireflies in the Meilin area are black-winged fireflies. Other common species during the viewing season include red-thorax black-winged fireflies, small red-thorax black-winged fireflies, large-end black fireflies, and end black fireflies. These species mostly gather near the rocky areas of the Chushui Zi section of Wulong Trail, where they dwell among grass and tree branches, glowing in yellow and orange-red hues. For those looking to photograph fireflies, the “firefly conditions” at the Chushui section are the most beginner-friendly, making it ideal for first-time photographers or those not used to night shooting.

Due to weather conditions this year, the peak firefly activity for the 2014 Tainan Meilin Firefly Season is slightly delayed. The fact that this is the eighth consecutive year for the event reflects the success of ecological preservation and conservation efforts. In recent years, the Tainan City Government has integrated tourism and gourmet experiences with firefly viewing, helping to boost the local economy of Meilin. To complement the firefly season, the Tourism Bureau and the Meilin Leisure Agriculture Association have planned farm experience activities, including farm meals, orchard exploration, DIY agricultural product workshops, and firefly viewing.
