Model of Taichung MRT Green Line train unveiled; catch a sneak peek at the New City Hall

The future Taichung MRT Green Line, which will connect Wuri, Wenxin, and Beitun, had its train design unveiled on the 21st by the Taichung City Government’s Transportation Bureau. The contractor, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., presented the design of the Green Line train, and even created a 1:40 scale physical model as a gift to the Taichung City Government. This model is now on public display at the Multimedia Marketing Pavilion on the 9th floor of the New City Hall, giving the public an early look.

The first Taichung MRT Green Line, expected to be completed and operational by the end of 2017, will use an elevated transport system, similar to Taipei’s Wenhu Line. According tothe “Taichung MRT Fan Page,”multiple photos taken by netizens showing the ongoing construction reveal that many station sites have already had their piers and U-shaped beams installed. Taichung City Transportation Bureau Director Lin Liang-tai also stated that the overall progress of the Green Line has reached 42%.

The Green Line train model unveiled for the first time on the 21st consists of two carriages, measuring approximately 109 cm in length, 7.4 cm in width, and 9.5 cm in height. Its exterior design is based on the concept of “new buds blooming,” while the interior follows a theme of “clean, bright, and light.” The front of the train features a streamlined shape, complemented by windows and green trim, giving the train a modern appearance. Once operational, each train will accommodate around 536 passengers (approximately 268 per carriage), with an average operating speed of 35 km/h and a maximum cruising speed of 70 km/h. The trains will also feature fully automated, driverless operation.
