Rent for 1,000 yuan lets you grow 2 pots of vegetables – Sky Farm at Taipei Expo Park now open for adoption

Remember the once wildly popular Facebook game "Happy Farm"? Taipei Expo Park has now set up a "Sky Farm" within the park, offering the public the chance to adopt simple potted plants and grow “natural, healthy, and chemical-free” seasonal crops, letting citizens experience the joy of hands-on vegetable gardening. In land-scarce and expensive Taipei, rent isn’t cheap — the adoption period is three months per term, costing 3,000 yuan per term, which breaks down to 1,000 yuan per month for two pots.

The concept of “urban farming” has been gradually gaining popularity. In many communities or residential buildings, small farms have been created on rooftops, allowing people to become happy urban farmers while also spending time outdoors, and enjoying the peace of mind and health benefits that come with eating produce they’ve grown themselves.

Adhering to this concept, Taipei Expo Park established the "Sky Farm" in February 2014. Using the remaining steps from the old Zhongshan Football Stadium, it placed pots of various crops and hosts irregular DIY events where the public can harvest fruits and vegetables on-site and prepare meals with them, experiencing the joy of being a “farmer for a day.” Now, Taipei Expo Park has announced that starting now, the farm will be open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. While visitors can't harvest crops themselves, there will be guides offering 15-minute talks on the crop cultivation process.

In addition, the potted plants in the farm are available for public adoption. Each adoption unit consists of two pots — leafy greens can yield 6–8 plants per pot, melons 2–3 plants, and tomatoes or strawberries 3–4 plants. After adopting,the adoption period is three months per term, at 3,000 yuan per term. The fee includes seedlings, fertilizer, maintenance, and technical consultation.。

The Taipei Exhibition and Convention Industry Development Foundation, which manages the program, stated that after the adoption period ends, participants can choose to renew for another term or take their own pots home, bringing the cultivated seedlings along with the soil to continue growing. During the adoption period, if any crops are harvested, participants can collect them themselves.
