Low-cost carriers are cheaper than traditional airlines  Consumer Foundation: Passenger rights remain the same

In recent years, the ticket price advantages offered by low-cost airlines (Low-cost Carrier, commonly known as LCC or low-cost airlines) have gradually been accepted by consumers in Taiwan. Taiwanese carriers such as China Airlines and TransAsia Airways have also successively entered the low-cost airline market. It is reported that TransAsia Group’s low-cost airline “V Air” plans to launch its first route, Taipei–Osaka, as early as September this year, and also intends to expand its flight network between Taiwan and Japan.

According to Chen Chih-yi, publisher of the Consumer Reports magazine under the Consumers' Foundation of the Republic of China, compared to traditional airlines, low-cost carriers reduce ticket prices by cutting in-flight services or onboard hardware facilities, but this does not mean that passengers' rights are compromised. Therefore, whether booking online, reviewing ticketing regulations, or reading the terms of purchase contracts, consumers must read carefully to protect their own rights.

In cases of flight delays or cancellations, low-cost airlines should also take responsibility and appropriately provide assistance such as accommodation and meals to passengers. If a connecting flight cannot be boarded due to a delay or cancellation of a previous flight, the airline operating the earlier flight should also be responsible for ensuring the connection.

Chen Chih-yi also pointed out that whether it is a traditional airline or a low-cost carrier, consumers must carefully understand the airline’s regulations before purchasing tickets. He also recommends choosing airlines with a good reputation and solid flight history. In case of any consumer disputes or concerns, one can also seek help from consumer protection officers or the Civil Aeronautics Administration to ensure a safe and smooth flight experience.
