If you want to experience the feeling of “the sky as your roof and the earth as your bed,” then “camping” is probably the best outdoor activity out there. To promote camping culture, the “2014 Highlight Waterfront Tent Festival” was held for the first time on May 3rd and 4th at Machangding Memorial Park, organized by the Wanhua Folklore Improvement Practice Association of Taipei City and the Machangding Community Development Association.2014 Highlight Waterfront Tent Festival”, in addition to letting the public enjoy the charm of the waterfront scenery, also featured a variety of unique tents and campers on-site.

The inaugural “Tent Festival” boasted an impressive lineup. In addition to co-organization by the Taipei City Government’s Tourism and Travel Bureau and displays of unique tents by multiple vendors, the Ministry of National Defense also showcased command tents rarely seen by the public, some military tents currently used by service members, and mobile central kitchen food trucks responsible for catering during military exercises—all on display at this event.

The “2014 Highlight Waterfront Tent Festival” is divided into three major zones: the “Cultural & Creative Market Area,” the “Ministry of National Defense Exhibition Area,” and the “Camping Tent Exhibition Area.” The “Cultural & Creative Market Area” will feature stalls set up by local communities around the park, offering a festive bazaar-like atmosphere where visitors can hunt for treasures, plus live cartoonists sketching portraits for attendees. The “Ministry of National Defense Exhibition Area” will showcase military tents, central kitchen food trucks, and more.

The “Camping Tent Exhibition Area” will display a variety of innovative and colorful tents and lighting equipment from different vendors, along with live cooking demonstrations and instructional activities. Additionally, over 10 customized camper vans will be on display. The site will also designate six spaces for visitors wishing to have a picnic—bring your own tent to pitch or set up a tarp—but since Machangding Memorial Park is not an official camping site, overnight stays are not permitted.

Besides admiring the unique tents, you can also enjoy a saxophone performance by the riverside of the park at 6 PM on May 3rd, soaking in the increasingly enchanting nighttime ambiance of Taipei’s waterfront.
