What comes to mind when you think of Taiwanese cuisine? Plates of sizzling stir-fries? A big table full of aromatic, colorful dishes? For Sanheyuan, Taiwanese food is simply what Taiwanese people love to eat, perhaps with a touch of nostalgic flavor. So besides traditional dishes like dried tofu with shredded pork, sesame oil mushroom and cabbage, and fried rice, the restaurant also offers colorful rainbow silver rolls. Made with different fruits and vegetables that give each roll a unique hue, the colors don’t clash but instead blend harmoniously in the mouth, making the flavors even more vibrant.

There are also uniquely shaped buns in the lineup—Little Green KoKo Matcha Bun, Little Black Chewy Peanut Bun, Little White Chewy Cranberry and Milk Crumb Bun, and the red Super Powerful Mushroom Bun filled with sweet potato cheese and macadamia nuts. The buns, adorned with drawn-on eyes and mouths, are almost too cute to eat, breaking the traditional mold of the classic fluffy white bun.

When it comes to beef noodles, you can’t miss the “Beef Noodle Alley” on Lane 38, Zhengzhou Road / Tacheng Street. Unfortunately, with the relocation of military dependents’ villages, many beef noodle stalls have closed or moved elsewhere. Jianhong Beef Noodles relocated near Ximending and was renamed Fuhong Beef Noodles. Even so, its decades-old delicious taste still attracts customers of all ages.

The menu at the shop is simple, featuring only soup, noodles, and dumplings. First-timers can start with the smooth and savory red braised broth. Those who prefer a stronger flavor can add the shop’s homemade spicy beef tallow or basic toppings like garlic, pickled mustard greens, and doubanjiang. The tender, slow-cooked beef is richly aromatic and makes your mouth water the moment it’s served.

Only open during the late-night hours, “A Cai Shrimp Fish” shatters the typical image of greasy, dirty braised pork rice stalls. With its bright and clean storefront wafting the traditional aroma of minced pork, it’s a must-visit spot for night owls in western Taipei whenever hunger strikes. Even veteran food critic Hu Tianlan and celebrity Xiao S have given it high praise.

The signature “Braised Pork Rice” has a higher fat-to-lean ratio, but after being braised for a long time in the sauce, the fat becomes smooth and sticky without being greasy. Paired with hot white rice, it’s addictive. Meanwhile, the “Shrimp Fish” stands out for its freshness—the resulting broth is sweet and smooth, and the rich fish belly requires minimal seasoning, offering a light yet delicious taste.

At first glance resembling something from a pet store, the “Black Meat Sauce Late-Night Snack” is actually a highly rated late-night dish online, famous for its stir-fried instant noodles and egg crepes that satisfy countless hungry stomachs. The signature stir-fried noodles come with cabbage, corn, meat patties, and eggs—generous toppings that keep the noodles chewy. The owner says the five types of noodles are all different, so picky eaters might want to try them all to compare.

Additionally, the egg crepes are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. For something a bit more special, try the basil egg crepe roll—the whole crepe is stuffed with basil, giving it a rich aroma and hearty texture that leaves a lasting impression. The shop also offers toast for night owls with more varied tastes.

Opened less than a year ago, “Old Chen’s Cold Noodles” has become a huge hit across Banqiao. Unlike typical restaurants, the owner has a day job, so the supply of cold noodles is limited. Also, the operating hours differ from most eateries. Though it started as a street food stall and has now moved indoors, there’s already a line of foodies waiting before it even opens—proof of its popularity.

The secret lies in how the owner generously drizzles the specially made cold noodles with sesame paste, then adds fried sauce. The cool, chewy noodles perfectly blend with the rich, savory sauce. Add a soft-centered egg and pair it with a warm bowl of miso meatball soup, and this limited-time, limited-quantity late-night snack becomes truly irresistible.

After seeing these late-night eateries, does it make you feel like there’s always a place for night owls to enjoy a good meal? Even if Taiwan’s version of a late-night diner doesn’t have a charming owner spinning tales, these meals still deliver warmth to busy office workers.
